Police investigate downtown optometry office burglary

Brookhaven police are investigating a robbery that occurred atSmith Optometry sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesdaymorning.
Assistant Police Chief Nolan Jones said the business premisesare still being inventoried to find out what is missing.
“There’s an undetermined amount of money and valuables missingat this time,” he said.
Office manager Elizabeth Allen said when she arrived at theoffice Wednesday morning, she first noticed that a welcome mat wasout of place.
“I thought that was strange,” she said. “It’s usually rightwhere it’s supposed to be.”
Then she noticed wood shavings on the steps, and when she openedthe door, she noticed the lock broken off, she said.
“I closed the door back and waited until someone got here,” shesaid.
When her father, Dr. Mark Smith, arrived, the two went throughthe office together and noticed that a large, heavy, rolling safefull of important papers and valuables was missing, as well as atleast one laptop.
Police estimated they would be on the scene for a whileWednesday doing their inventory and investigation.
