Amtrak strikes vehicle in downtown Brookhaven

The intersection of Monticello Street and Whitworth Avenue wasclosed down after a car attempting to run a railroad crossing wasstruck by an oncoming Amtrak train Wednesday just after 1 p.m.

Witnesses said a Daewoo Nubira station wagon was attempting tocircumnavigate the closed arms of the crossing at Whitworth Avenueand Monticello Street when the Amtrak, which was scheduled to stopin Brookhaven struck her car.

The victim was freed from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life andtaken to King’s Daughters Medical Center by ambulance, but herstatus is unknown. Emergency workers said she was awake and able torespond verbally at the scene.

Officials at the accident said an investigation will more thanlikely be conducted by railroad officials. The track reopenedaround 2:30 p.m.
