Mike Harrell Buie

On Aug. 30, 2009, God called Mike Harrell Buie home. Havingsuffered from Alzheimer’s for numerous years, Mr. Buie diedpeacefully, surrounded by his family, at his home. He was 67 yearsold and was a lifelong resident of the Shady Grove community inLincoln County.

Born on April 7, 1942, in Lincoln County, Mr. Buie was the sonof Prentiss and Christine McDavid Buie. He was the youngest of foursiblings. After losing his mother at an early age, he was reared byhis maternal grandparents, Ithamar and Jessie McDavid. As a boy, hefollowed in the footsteps of his grandfather and learned to lovedogs and fox hunting. As a young man, Mr. Buie sailed the sea for30 days from the U.S. shores to those of Vietnam. A member of theU.S. Army, he was a ground fighter in the 12th Infantry of theFourth Division near the Cambodian border. He retired from NorthPike School Transportation and Croft Metal Inc. and he was alifelong active member of Shady Grove Baptist Church until hishealth declined.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Prentiss and ChristineBuie; his maternal grandparents, Ithamar and Jessie McDavid;paternal grandparents, Odom and Gertrude Buie; and a sister,Frances B. Powell.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Joann WallaceBuie; his son, M. Todd Buie, and his wife, Melissa Buie, ofBrandon; two grandchildren, Eliza and Evan Buie; a brother, SammieBuie and wife, Evelyn, of McComb; a sister, Sylvia Buie Walker, andhusband, Malcolm, of Ruth; and brother-in-law, Thad Powell Jr., ofBaton Rouge, La. Other survivors include his aunts, Louise Rollins,of Summit, Winnie McCraw, of Clinton, and Doris McDavid, ofBrandon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, 2009,at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb. Services and burial willtake place at Shady Grove Baptist Church, beginning at 11 a.m. onTuesday, Sept. 1, with the Rev. John Pratt officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Bacot, Holton Lofton, Pete Rawls, JohnPowell, Shane McCullough, Jon Jordan and Mark Bailey. DouglasDillon will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
