‘Cats split with FC girls

MEADVILLE – The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs opened the 2009slow pitch softball season with a doubleheader split with BogueChitto Saturday night at Shortstop Fields.

The Lady Dawgs won the first game 2-1, but lost the second 6-5.Bogue Chitto resumes play today at Wesson beginning at 5 p.m.Franklin County plays host to Natchez Cathedral starting at5:30.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) got some big hits from their seniors inthe opening game as Rainee Bethley, Kacey Smith and Morgan Knappcollected multiple hits.

Smith had a triple and a single while Bethley and Knapp eachadded two singles.

For the Cats (0-1), coached by Scott and Denise Leggett,Adrienne Wallace and Bradi Davis led with 2 singles apiece. DarcyMiller, Josie Porter, Mattie Avants, Alexis Givens and KaylieCrosby hit safely.

Mildred Starks collected the win for Franklin County on themound, while Kerri McGehee absorbed the loss.

“Both teams played great defense,” said Leggett. “We were ableto get out of crucial situations. The hitting was about what weexpected for the first game.”

BC 6, FC 5

Big hits by the ‘Cats (1-1) and costly errors from the LadyBulldogs gave Bogue Chitto an advantage in Game Two of thedoubleheader.

Freshman Adrienne Wallace led the Cats’ attack with a triple andsingle. while Miller added two singles. Rheagan Welch, Avants,Givens and Porter singled.

Bogue Chitto took an early 3-0 first inning lead in thecontest.

“We played strong defense and our offense came through in thefinal innings,” added Leggett. “I was pleased with our hustle andgrit.”

Franklin County, handcuffed by 7 errors in the contest, got twosingles each from Allison Hauer, Mildred Starks and DestinyDeDeaux.

Vintrice Briggs added a double for the Lady Dawgs.

“Errors bit us in the second game,” said Franklin County headcoach Dana Smith who is assisted by her husband Mickey Smith. “Wemade four errors in the first inning which allowed three runs toscore. Leaving 10 base runners stranded didn’t help either.”

McGehee notched the win for Bogue Chitto.

FC senior Desiree Buie was saddled with the loss.
