BOGUE CHITTO – Area football coaches found a few answers butthey still had a lot of question marks at the conclusion of Fridaynight’s Bogue Chitto Football Jamboree. On a warm night on TroySmith Field, teams from Bogue Chitto, Enterprise, West Lincoln andWesson compared skills in a controlled scrimmage.
The teams won’t play again until Aug. 21 (Classic Game) or Aug.28 (regular season) when the 2009 campaign kicks off. In themeantime, players will labor through a long offseason that willinclude lifting weights, running and agility drills.
Two scrimmages were held at the same time Friday night on eitherside of the 50-yard line. Offenses and defenses took turns after aseries of plays.
Wesson, with the return of quarterback Matt P. Smith and runningback Jeromy Smith, appears to have the most offensive threats.Coach Tommy Clopton’s Cobras advanced to the Class 2A stateplayoffs last year.
“We finished the spring healthy,” said Clopton. “A lot of ouryoung kids got to play tonight.
“Now we go back and watch film,” Clopton continued. “I saw somebright spots in our players.”
An unexpected bright spot was the transfer of Enterprise runningback Deon Pendleton to Wesson four weeks ago. Pendleton wasEnterprise’s leading rusher last season.
Enterprise is led by rising senior quarterback Cody Brister. TheYellow Jackets were hit hard by graduation.
“We looked good at times and poor the other,” said Enterprisecoach Wayne Rogers. “We have got to find the ones who want toplay.
“We must play harder. We have a long way to go to get to wherewe need to be.”
Bogue Chitto advanced to the Class 1A state playoffs last seasonbut the Bobcats were hit extremely hard by graduation. A priorityfor Gareth Sartin is replacing 4-year standout Seth Avants atquarterback.
Javier Gee took most of the varsity snaps Friday night. Runningback Byron Kersee is being counted on to carry much of the loadthis fall.
“It was good to get out tonight and play,” said Coach Sartin.”We have a lot of holes to fill and a lot of improvement to makebefore next season.”
West Lincoln, under the direction of Coach Chris Calcote, wasminus starting quarterback Tyler Case who was injured last season.Dee Price took most of the snaps in the jamboree.
“We had a good effort tonight,” said Calcote. “We improved onthe things we practiced on during the spring.
“We got tired early but we will work on (conditioning) duringthe summer.”
Calcote’s Bears are riding a 26-game losing streak. He saidmajor changes in Region 4-1A should help his team realize somevictories this fall.
