Authorities filed affidavits Tuesday to charge three juvenileWesson Attendance Center students with false representation as acontrolled substance, Wesson Police Chief Chad O’Quinn said.

“When someone passes along a substance claiming it to be acontrolled substance, that brings these charges,” O’Quinn said.”Based on confidentiality we can’t comment on the ages or grades ofthese juveniles, but they are minors.”

O’Quinn said one of the young people will also face anadditional charge of possession of a controlled substance.

The juveniles were passing around over-the-counter medications, claiming them to be other drugs, the police chief said. Theactivities led to several suspensions from the school.

“We were dealing with sinus medication, Tylenol, etc.,” hesaid.

The juveniles will be served with a summons to appear in youthcourt rather than being arrested and put in jail at this point,O’Quinn said. He said the next step would be up to youth court.

“Now we can let the youth court make the determination as far aswhat type punishment will be put on them,” he said.

WAC Principal Ronald Greer said earlier in the investigationthat the reason for “under a dozen” suspensions was that anymedication in the possession of a student is to be registered withthe school nurse. Because the over-the-counter medicines were notregistered correctly, several students who were in possession ofthem were suspended.

“In my opinion, I think the principal handled it in a veryprofessional manner,” O’Quinn said. “And I’m glad it was discoveredbefore it could have led to things that are more serious.”
