Hazlehurst man hurt in weekend altercation

A Hazlehurst man remained hospitalized in stable condition atKing’s Daughters Medical Center after a Saturday night stabbing ina local parking lot, a spokesman said Monday.
Raleigh Anthony Szakel, age unknown, of Hazlehurst, was badlyinjured when an altercation that authorities said started inanother county came to Brookhaven early Saturday around 4 a.m.Officials did not identify the parking lot where the stabbingoccurred.
Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson and Investigator FrankLeggett said Szakel sustained several cuts to the stomach when heand some others had an altercation with a larger group.
“He doesn’t know who it was that cut him,” said Henderson. “Itwas four or five against two or three, and he ended up cut severaltimes in the stomach.”
Officials said of the group of people who were said to befighting, no other injuries were reported. Two unknown females, whofirst said they didn’t know Szakel, brought him to the emergencyroom.
“But investigation found that they were with him,” Hendersonsaid.
The probe into what exactly happened to Szakel is still ongoing,officials said, and they will meet with Szakel again in coming daysas his health improves.
“We’re hoping he’ll be out in the next couple of days and we’llinterview him again,” Leggett said.
Police officials said they currently have no suspects in thestabbing.
