Services for Mary Voncile Smith Johnston, of El Cajon, Calif.,were Thursday, Sept. 4. El Cajon Mortuary and Cremation Service wasin charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnston, 68, died Aug. 30, 2008. She was born inBrookhaven on Feb. 10, 1939, to Clyde Smith and Bessie Smith.

She was an English and speech teacher. She married Bill Johnstonin 1963. In 1971, she and her husband moved to San Diego, Calif.They celebrated their 45th anniversary in July 2008. Mrs. Johnstonnever met a person that she didn’t like, heard a joke she wouldn’tretell or get into a situation she believed she couldn’t handle.She loved her many friends and supported her family in all of theirendeavors. She was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church in ElCajon.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Debra FayByrd.

Survivors are her husband; a son, Scott Johnston and wife,Jessica, of Burbank, Calif.; a daughter, Katie Johnston, of ElCajon; her sisters, Jerelene Bell and husband, Bill, and BelindaCartwright and husband, Mike, of Gulfport.
