Deputy injured in accident

Officials said a Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy is shaken upbut otherwise doing fine after an early Sunday car accident.
Deputy Andrew Montgomery, 23, of Brookhaven, was responding to acall of a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of Interstate 55Sunday around 3:45 a.m. when he came upon a vehicle stalled in themiddle of the interstate.
Officials said the stalled car was still occupied, but did nothave its emergency flashers on or any other warning signal to letother traffic know that it was not moving. The identities of thosein the southbound stalled vehicle were not available.
When Montgomery swerved to avoid the stalled vehicle, he lostcontrol of his squad car. His vehicle left the road and struck anexit sign before going down an embankment just north of Exit 42 onthe southbound side, coming to rest just at a fence along aproperty line.
Officials on the scene said Brookhaven police officers lookingfor the northbound car saw Montgomery’s car at the bottom of thehill because his blue lights were still running. Montgomery wastransported to King’s Daughters Medical Center by ambulance, wherehe was treated and released.
Lincoln County Chief Deputy Johnny Hall said Montgomery is doingwell considering the circumstances.
“He’s fine,” Hall said. “He’s probably a little sore, and he hada mild concussion, according to the doctor.”
Hall said Montgomery will be on leave from work for a few daysto give him time to rest and recuperate from the incident.
“He should be back in action on Wednesday,” Hall said.
The motorist driving northbound in the southbound lane of I-55was apprehended by Brookhaven police officers, Hall said.
Jail reports indicate Shelton Lee Blue, 27, of 604 Adams St.,Brookhaven, was arrested and charged with driving on the wrong sideof the road and first offense driving under the influence(refusal). He has been released on bond.
