Man faces charges in burglaries

A local man was arrested Wednesday in connectin with a string ofhome burglaries in Brookhaven earlier this month, Police Chief PapHenderson said Thursday.

Jamal A. Stewart, 22, of 809 Dow St., was arrested afterinformation implicated him in three home burglaries the policedepartment has been investigating since the beginning of March.

The first one, a home on South Jackson, was burglarized on March5. The second burglary occurred on West Chippewa Street on March 7,and the third was on Halbert Heights Road on March 20.

Henderson said Stewart has been charged with three counts ofburglary and three counts of grand larceny.

“We were able to get enough information and evidence to prove hecommitted these burglaries,” Henderson said. “That lightens ourload a bit. We still have a couple of other ones to look at.”

Henderson said there was another burglary on Diane Drive thatinvestigators are eyeing Stewart for.

“We haven’t been able to connect him to that one yet, but theyare similar burglaries,” he said. “We’ve questioned him about otherburglaries.”

Some of the property stolen has been recovered, Hendersonsaid.

“We have some of it and we know where some of it is,” he said.”That’s one of the most important things right now is recoveringthe property.”
