Lady Wolves plug Pearl River

WESSON — When the Pearl River Lady Wildcats made a run at theCo-Lin Lady Wolves in the final 3:30 of the game, the hosts rose tothe occasion to turn away the visitors and secure a 60-49 SouthDivision win Monday night at Mullen Gymnasium.
Pearl River sophomore center Tori Keys nailed two free throws tocut the Co-Lin lead to 46-44 with 3.30 remaining in the game.Powered by a quick jump shot by sophomore guard Reisha Bullock, theLady Wolves went on a 14-5 run to post the victory.
Co-Lin (10-1, 1-0) visits division rival Southwest Thursday fortwo games, The women begin play at 5 p.m. Pearl River, coached byEd Walley, fell to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the South.
“Bullock stepped up and made some key shots,” said Co-Linwomen’s coach Gwyn Young following the win. “She made her freethrows.”
Bullock directed the Lady Wolves with a game-high 17 points, 4rebounds and 2 steals. She was 6 of 8 from the free throw line,going 4-for-4 in the final two minutes of play. Overeall, Co-Linmade 20 of 34 free throws.
“(Alisha) Mason did a good job rebounding,” said Young. Masonwas the second leading scorer with 11 points, scoring 8 in thefirst half. She also grabbed 9 rebounds. Tops off the backboardsKristin Ellis with 10 rebounds.
Co-Lin led Pearl River by 11 points, 34-23, at the half. TheLady Wolves started off slow in the opening minutes of the firsthalf. The Lady Wildcats led from the opening buzzer until the 11:15mark when Ellis hit a jumper to give the hosts a 12-11 lead. A jumpshot from teammate Rhonda Dumas put Co-Lin up 14-11 with 9:21left.
The Lady Wolves got a real boost off the bench in the finalminutes before halftime. With a 28-23 lead, freshman forward SondraMoncure nailed consecutive treys before the buzzer to give thehosts an 11-point advantage going into the dressing room.
“Both teams struggled offensively,” said Young. “Pearl Rivercame out aggressive. We played at that same level they did. We kepthanging in there to get the win.”
Second-half action saw the Lady Wildcats battle back but theycould never get closer than one point, 41-40, with 7:53 remaining.The Lady Wolves pulled away as back-to-back field goals by Bullockput the game out of reach.
“It was a good win,” stated Young. “Any win you get, you hadbetter get it while the getting’s good.”
Young said he was real pleased with the contributions of thereserves.
“We had some real good bench play,” added Young. “Some peoplecame in and gave us a lift. Yashunda Williams finished with 6rebounds. Moncure scored 6 points (2 treys).”
Powering Pearl River with 14 points and 6 rebounds was 5-10freshman guard Olivia Magee of Columbia. Following with 11 pointswas 5-11 freshman post player Brittany Lewis of Houma, La.
