Hornets melt freeze

Enterprise boys coach Josh Bass had a good idea to slow theup-tempo style of the Loyd Star Hornets. Freeze the basketball andtake them out of their game plan.
It might have worked. except Loyd Star made most of its shotsand Enterprise didn’t as the host Yellow Jackets fell to theHornets 39-23 in Division 6-2A action Tuesday night.
In the varsity girls game, Loyd Star commanded the tempo of thegame from the start and cruised to a 66-37 victory overEnterprise.
Enterprise hosts Wesson and Loyd Star invades Hinds AHS at UticaFriday night for more division action. The junior varsity gamesbegin at 4 p.m.
Loyd Star 39, Enterprise 23
The Hornets (12-2, 3-0) converted severalturnovers in the first quarter to take a 9-4 lead over the Jackets(2-12, 0-3) who froze the basketball to keep Loyd Star out of itsrunning game.
Second-quarter action saw the Loyd Star stay patient and continueto make shots while Enterprise missed. The Hornets owned a 21-9lead at the half.
“We did what we had to do to win,” said Loyd Star boyscoach Gene (Moochie) Britt after the win. “Enterprise held the balland we went out of our zone to man-to-man. At the halftime, wedecided to go back to zone since we had a 12-point lead.”
The third quarter was nearly scoreless as Loyd Star let Enterprisefreeze the ball and scored on turnovers to carry a 25-11 lead intothe final quarter.
“We had to control the ball tonight if we wanted to compete withLoyd Star,” said Enterprise boys coach Josh Bass. “Loyd Star is areal athletic team.”
Powering the Jackets with 15 points was Austin Everett. JeremySmith finished with 4 points.
The Hornets were directed by center Rickey Barnes with 14 points.Netting 8 points each were Ashton Fox and Glenn Thomas.
Loyd Star 66, Enterprise 37
The Lady Hornets (12-2, 3-0) placed 3 players in double figures.Leading Loyd Star with 14 points and 5 rebounds was guard ShannonChester. Haley Sones pumped in 13 points and pulled down 7rebounds. Following with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 4assists was Dakota Brooks.
“We ran our offense well tonight,” said Loyd Star girls coach BillyVaughn. “I was pleased with our effort. We still have a lot to workon.”
Loyd Star opened the first quarter with a 23-11 lead. A 21-8scoring run in the second quarter gave the Hornets a 42-19 lead atthe half.
For Coach Jill Nations’ Lady Jackets, Lacey Orr led with 8 pointsand 8 rebounds. Andrea Roberson netted 6 points and grabbed 7rebounds.
Junior varsity action
The Loyd Star boys rallied to beatEnterprise 37-34.
In the girls game, the Hornets nipped the Jackets 19-16.
