A Field Lark Lane bridge will be closed indefinitely Fridayafter officials were notified of a serious safety concern by stateengineers.
Officials cannot say when the bridge, located approximately onemile north of Union Street, will reopen.
“We know it is an inconvenience to people who use that road, butwe were given no option,” said Mayor Bob Massengill. “(The FederalHighway Administration) said if we did not do this we would be indanger of losing federal funding through the state.”
District Five Supervisor Gary Walker said he received a letterMonday from the Office of State Aid Road Construction of theMississippi Department of Transportation through the countyengineer notifying him that the bridge must be closed byFriday.
However, he said because the bridge was part of the city’s14.4-mile annexation earlier this year, it came under cityjurisdiction and he forwarded the letter to the mayor’s office.
