Lawrence Co. boys top Terry; girls tumble

MONTICELLO-Lawrence County and Terry split a varsitydoubleheader in Division 6-4A basketball action Friday night atLCHS. In boys play, Coach Preston Wilson’s Cougars beat Terry,63-53, in a hard-fought battle. In the girls game, Terry outgunnedthe Lady Cougars, 57-35.
The boys’ game was played at a torrid pace, but cold shooting inthe first three quarters kept the game close and low-scoringthrough three quarters. Lawrence County led 38-28 at the end of thethird period, with both teams exploding for 25 points in afast-paced fourth period.
The trio of Oliver Peyton, Albert Brown, and Perrin Wellscombined to score 50 of Lawrence County’s 63 points. Peyton led theway with 20 points, 18 coming in the second half. Peyton made6-of-6 clutch free throws in the fourth quarter.
Brown had 17 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Wells had 13points, 3 steals, and he took 2 charging fouls. Will Harris handedout 5 assists.
With the win, Lawrence County improved to 14-6 on the season.The Cougars are 4-2 in Division 6-4A games. Terry fell to 3-18overall, and 1-7 in the division. Lawrence County defeated Terry by2 points, at Terry, in December.
Marcelius Hansberry was outstanding for Terry. He almostsingle-handedly kept the Bulldogs in the game, scoring 22points.
The Terry girls defeated the Lady Cougars forthe second time this season. Vicki Rutland’s underdog girlscompeted well in the first half, but absolutely could not find thebasket. Thus, Terry led 29-13 at the half, a deficit too great forthe offense-starved Lady Cougars to overcome.
“We had a chance tonight,” said Rutland. “I thought our girlsplayed evenly with them, other than the fact that we just couldn’tmake a basket. I can find no fault with the effort. They playedhard.”
Terry improved to 6-15 with the win. The Lady Bulldogs are 3-5in the division. LCHS fell to 1-19 overall. The Lady Cougars are0-6 in Division 6-4A play.
Ariel Dawkins led Terry with 21 points, and Mickea Hodges added11.
Fiere Brown led Lawrence County with 11 points. Brown andCandice Little each had 5 rebounds. Cande’l May and BrittneyCollins each handed out 3 assists.
The Lawrence County Cougars and Lady Cougars will travel toFlorence on Tuesday night for division action.
