Black dominates boards in BHS win

Swayze Black was elected Chairman of the Boards Friday night inSinclair Gymnasium. The 6-foot-1 junior collected a career-high 21rebounds in leading the Brookhaven Lady Panthers to a 49-27trouncing of the Terry Lady Bulldogs.
Black also scored 10 points and blocked 5 shots as the LadyPanthers raised their record to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the Region6-4A race.
“I was focused on blocking out,” answered Black, when askedabout her rebounding performance. “I think we can win our districtand make it back to state.
“We are working hard in practice and playing as a team,” Blackcontinued. “Coach (Freda) Craft is a good coach. She knowsbasketball.”
Craft, in her first year at the BHS helm, shouted encouragement,pointing out mistakes and applauding good plays. Black and 6-2junior post Nikki Byrd dominated the paint. Byrd, coping withflu-like symptoms, led all scorers with 16 points, plus bagging 11rebounds.
Terry (2-9, 1-1) couldn’t compete with Brook’s superiorheight.
“Terry shot threes in desperation because they couldn’t goinside,” said Craft. “They were shooting long and we were saggingoff.”
Senior guard Jermecia Jones pumped in 10 points for thePanthers, including 2 treys. Byrd and Black each scored 8 points inBrook’s 26-point fourth quarter.
Terry, coached by Bobby Neal, got 13 points from Sheena Allen,including 4 treys. Center April Dawkins had 5 rebounds.
Brookhaven hosts Florence Tuesday night for a divisiondoubleheader, starting at 6 p.m. with the varsity girls game.
