Tombstone target of police investigation

Local law enforcement officials are searching for the culpritwho left a tombstone in a shopping cart at a retail store over theweekend.

Brookhaven Police Capt. Roger Wilson said a small white marbletombstone was left in a shopping cart in the Wal-Mart Supercenterparking lot on Saturday.

“We’re looking to find out what cemetery it came from and returnit,” Wilson said.

The last name on the tombstone is Mitchell and the date reads1950, Wilson said. Police are withholding further information toverify ownership.

“It looks pretty old,” he added.

Wilson said he was going to check with the City of Brookhaven’scemeteries to see if they have any tombstones missing and if not,he would move on to the county churches.

“We fully expect to find out where where it came from,” Wilsonsaid of the tombstone.

Wilson said the department is checking video surveillance of theparking lot to see if it shows who may have left the tombstone inthe shopping cart.

“Obviously, it was a prank that’s not very funny,” Wilsonsaid.
