Douglas enjoys action on defense

Brookhaven Academy’s Aaron Douglas enjoys the action atdefensive end. Douglas was credited with 10 tackles and a fumblerecovery in the Cougars’ 28-12 homecoming victory over the BowlingGreen Academy Buccaneers.

For his efforts, Douglas (5-10, 160, sr.) has been selected TheDAILY LEADER’s Defensive Player of the Week for the seventh week ofthe 2006 season.

Douglas and the unbeaten Cougars (7-0) are on a roll. They areleading the District 6-AA race (3-0) and are pointing for the stateplayoffs.

According to Douglas, support for the Cougars has been growingeach week. “Everyone is excited about our team. They make you feelspecial.”

He is the 18-year-old son of Jan and Jason Douglas. Both parentswere active at Enterprise, their high school alma mater. Jasonplayed football and Jan was a cheerleader. They are members ofEasthaven Baptist Church. Aaron has an older sister, NicoleDeere.

“I’ve been playing defensive end since the eighth grade,” saidDouglas. “I try to get the quarterback and as many sacks as Ican.”

Working with Douglas in the defensive line are end BradleyAllred, and tackles Patrick Wall and Sawyer Smith. At linebackerare Kolby Byrd, Steven Watts and Brandon Smith.

Working in BA’s secondary are Corey Dickerson, Price Sessums,Keith Franklin and Matt Rushing.

Brookhaven Academy first-year head coach Bo Milton said Douglasplays larger than his size. “Aaron is gritty. He’s 100 miles perhour on every play. He has a lot of want-to. He gets off the blocksbetter than anybody we’ve got.”

Douglas also works as a backup tight end and on specialteams.

He said Milton has brought a high level of energy to theprogram. “Coach Milton is enthusiastic and he’s a great coach. Hehas brought this team together as one.”

Looking to the future, Douglas said he plans to attendCopiah-Lincoln Community College and determine “what I can do withmy life.”

After the football season, Douglas plans to play soccer for BA.In his spare time, he enjoys hunting and fishing.

Douglas is a big fan of Baltimore Ravens quarterback SteveMcNair, a Mount Olive native. He used to follow the TennesseeTitans until McNair was traded to Baltimore.

His favorite movie is “Eight Seconds.” It’s about bull ridingcompetition on the rodeo circuit.
