Hickman wins 12 single title

RIDGELAND — Will Hickman of Bogue Chitto captured the Boys 12Singles crown in the Cabot Lodge Southern Qualifying Tournament atthe Ridgeland Tennis Center. Hickman won four matches and willadvance to the Southern Closed Championships in Columbia, S.C.,later this month.
Hickman, a student at Brookhaven Academy, earned himself No. 1ranking after knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in thetournament. In the semifinals, he defeated No. 1 seed GeorgeGoldhoff of Gulfport. He beat No. 2 seed Hunter Box of Grenada 4-6,6-2, 6-0 in the title match.
Several Brookhaven boys competed in the tournament, includingJake Baker, Matthew Hart, Dudley Lampton, Austin Watts, MichaelWilson and Austin Watts in 14s and Lakenya Kelly in 16s.
Lampton won two singles matches while Wilson, Watts and Bakereach won one match. Kelly won twice in 16s.
Wilson and Lampton won two doubles matches and reached thefinals of 14s.
In girls action, Alex Lea competed in 14s. Anna C. Moak,Rosemary Moak and Sydney Moak participated in 18s.
Anna C. Moak won three matches, losing in the consolationfinals. Anna C. and Rosemary Moak won one doubles match. SydneyMoak, Rosemary Moak and Lea each won one match in singles.
Also entered were Davis Beard (girls 14s) and Madeline Beard(girls 12) of Natchez who take their tennis lessons in Brookhaven.Davis won three matches and lost in the finals. Madeline won twomatches.
The top finishers in each age bracket qualified for theSoutherns.
