Cougars eliminate Central Hinds

RAYMOND — In a battle between Cougar teams, Brookhaven Academywhipped Central Hinds 13-3 Thursday night to win the first round ofthe Class AA Academy State Baseball Playoffs. the visiting Cougarspounded out five home runs in the victory.

Brookhaven won the first game of the best-of-three series by ascore of 4-0 Wednesday night.

Last night, the Cougars collected five home runs in the win.

Brookhaven, coached by Stephen Cooksey, advances to the secondround which will be held next week. The Cougars improved to 21-2 onthe season.

Brookhaven lead 2-0 in the first inning. Keith Franklin singledand Corey Dickerson ripped his first of 2 home runs.

Central Hinds came back in the second inning to tie the game at2-all. Carson Widding walked. Cody Ward single. Jordan Stubbssingled to score Widding. Ward scored on an error.

In the third, Brookhaven collected seven runs for a 9-2 lead.Ryan Vanderslice reached base on an error. Franklin singled andDickerson smashed a 3-run homer. Paul Davis double and T-Boy Lynchfollowed with a 2-run homer. Seth Davis singled and Kolby Byrddoubled. Franklin came back with a 2 run RBI single.

Sixth inning action saw Franklin double for Brookhaven.Dickerson singled than Jeremy Winborne cracked a 3-run homer. Lynchfollowed with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Central Hinds’ Nic Bethany hit asolo homer to cut the deficit to 13-3.

In the top of the third, Brookhaven exploded for a 7 runs thenadded 4 in the top of the sixth to eliminate Central Hinds.

Dickerson (4-2) was the winning pitcher with 6 strikeouts and 2walks. Daniel Mills fanned 2 and walked 1 in 2 2/3 innings. WillDorman worked the remainder with 4 earned runs, no strikeouts, 2walks, 4 hits and 2 hit batters.

Adding support to the Brookhaven win was Franklin with two moresingles. Seth Davis drilled a single.

Central Hinds got a single from Andrew Parrish and Ward.
