New school leaders get board OK

The 2006-07 school year for the Brookhaven School District willbring a couple of administrative changes following approval Tuesdayby the district’s board of trustees.
Dr. Thomas Ann Gatlin, a Brookhaven High School teacher who has18 years of teaching experience, will take the reins as assistantprincipal at Alexander Junior High School, following theresignation of Scott Merrill.
“I think she’ll be a huge asset at Alexander,” saidSuperintendent Lea Barrett.

Also changing schools and receiving a promotion will be Dr.Marilyn Dow-Harris, who serves as an assistant principal at BHS andhas 26 years experience in education. She will become principal atMullins School.
“There is a need to place some students on the Mullins campus…and my recommendation is for Dr. Dow-Harris to serve as principal,”said Barrett.
District officials are already looking for a replacement for theassistant principal position, said Barrett.
A newcomer to the district will be Alfreda Craft, who currentlyserves as the girls’ basketball coach in Hazlehurst. Craft, with 16years in education and 11 years in the Air Force, will take thehelm for girls’ basketball team at BHS in August.
Craft will replace Billy Holmes, who is retiring after fouryears as varsity girls’ basketball coach.
Other matters of discussion included the board’s walk-through ofall schools in the district Monday. Board members expressed howimpressed they were during their annual tour.

“I would say, overall, I was well-pleased with the way (theschools) looked,” said board president Carl Aycock.
