Supervisors are considering a request to move the Lincoln CountyCivil Defense office.

Clifford Galey, director of the civil defense, made the requestduring a recent meeting with the board. The present East ChippewaStreet location is in sore need of renovations, he said.

“Right now it has buckets in the attic catching water,” Galeysaid.

The building was purchased nearly 10 years ago with a flat, rubber roof that has not withstood the ravages of time, hesaid.

“We’ve had trouble with it from the beginning,” Galey said. “Thebuilding isn’t worth what it would cost to fix the roof.”

The civil defense director proposed locating the office in avacant house at the new business park. The city and county jointlyown the house through an alliance formed to create the park.

Galey said he mentioned the possibility to city officials andthey did not appear to be opposed.

“I realize it’s not downtown, but it’s a lot better than what Ihave now,” he said. “It would cost less than what I have now torenovate.”

The inside of the house is in good shape, Galey said, but itdoes need some minor roof repairs.

The only obstacle to the move would be that the business parkproperty was purchased by the alliance for the creation of jobs, said Chancery Clerk Tillmon Bishop. It cannot be used topermanently house the civil defense offices.

However, Bishop said, that does not preclude Galey from usingthe building for his offices until a prospective industry wants theproperty.

District Two Supervisor Bobby J. Watts asked Galey where hewould move when an industry wanted the land, but the civil defensedirector didn’t have an answer.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t looked that far aheadyet.”
