A flag for the City of Brookhaven and appointments to variouscity boards highlighted Tuesday’s meeting of the mayor and board ofaldermen.
Following a brief discussion at the last meeting, aldermen lastnight approved a revised design for a city flag.
“I think it’d be good to have a flag,” said Mayor Bob Massengillin presenting options for a new city banner.
The new flag features a red field with a red, white and blueemblem that borrows from the Chamber of Commerce’s stylized “B”logo. In white letters across the bottom of the flag is”Homeseeker’s Paradise.”
“I would want us to find places to display it,” Massengill saidof the flag.
The mayor said it could be flown outside the Government Complexand carried during the Parade of Flags at the annual MississippiMunicipal League gathering. Massengill did not have a cost estimateor an idea of how long it would take to have the flag made.
Aldermen said the new flag designe looked nice. They said anearlier suggestion, which had the Chamber logo on a white field, was too plain.
In other business, Dan Brown was re-appointed to serve on theBrookhaven School District board of trustees. Brown’s current termdoes not expire until the end of February, but Ward ThreeAlderwoman Mary Wilson last night made the motion to re-appointhim.
“He is excited about serving again,” Massengill said.
Other officials said they had a lot of respect for Brown, whohas been on the school board since October 1998, and said he is a”good man.”
“He is really a rock-solid individual,” said Alderman-at-largeLes Bumgarner.
Following some earlier board discussions, aldermen approvedeight members to serve on a new Airport Advisory Board. Althoughthe panel was envisioned as a seven-member board, Ward FiveAldermen D.W. Maxwell said it was only fair to let the eight whowere nominated to serve.
Aldermen drew numbers out of a hat to determine who will serveone-year terms and who will serve two-term terms. Board members maybe re-appointed.
Serving one-year terms will be Paul Barnett, Brad Hall, CharlesDixon and Robert Tyler. Those selected for two-year terms includedDr. Terry J. Puckett, Dr. Don Doty, Stanford Qualls and RogerLeggett.
Also Tuesday, aldermen approved a request from Ward Two AldermanTerry Bates to appoint Vernastine Byrd to the city’s Board ofAdjustments. She will replace Carl Holloway on the board.
In another appointment matter, aldermen will decide between BradBoerner and Carlisle Henderson for city prosecutor.
Current City Prosecutor Raymond Boutwell is resigning to devotemore time to his private practice. Boerner and Henderson will beinvited to the Jan. 3 board meeting to meet aldermen prior to avote on the appointment.
