Loyd Star clips Amite Co. Trojans

The Loyd Star Hornets wrapped up their season with a 20-18Region 6-2A win over the Amite County Trojans Friday night atWilliam E. “Sambo” Smith Field.
Loyd Star, coached by Josh Thibodeaux, improved to 2-6 overalland 1-4 in region play. Amite County fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 inthe region.
“I’m glad to win the final game,” said Loyd Star head footballcoach Josh Thibodeaux. “It is good for our seniors. It builds onnext year.”
Powering the Hornets to the win with 17 carries for 103 yardsand 2 touchdowns was senior running back Michael Britt.
Loyd Star scored at the 5:35 mark in the first quarter on a30-yard, pass-play from quarterback Tyler Williford to Kyle James.Patrick Holcomb kicked the extra point to give the hosts a 7-0lead.
Amite County roared back to score on an 8-yard run by ChrisDonseulaux that cut the deficit to 7-6 after failing on the 2-pointconversion run at the end of the first quarter.
In the top of the second quarter. the Hornets went up 14-6 on a4-yard burst by Britt and another PAT kick from Holcomb with 3:06left.
The Trojans punched in their second TD at the 1:15 mark, on a3-yard carry by Carroll Weathersby. The try for 2 points failed asAmite County cut Loyd Star’s lead to 14-12 at halftime.
Loyd Star’s lead increased to 20-12 at the 11:51 mark on a13-yard, pass-play from Williford to Britt. The kick failed.
The Trojans closed their deficit to 2 points, 20-18, following a1-yard run by quarterback Jeremy Snowden with 5:24 left to play.The 2-point conversion pass play failed.
Contributing to the Loyd Star win with 5 of 15 pass completionsfor 87 yards and two interceptions was Williford. Holcomb led with2 catches for 40 yards followed by Britt with a pair of catches for17.
On the ground, the Hornets got added support from Donald Shorterwith 5 rushes for 74 yards.
Leading Amite County was Snowden with 7 of 20 completions for189 yards and 1 interception. Carroll Weathersby caught 3 passesfor 42 yards.
On the ground, Snowden led the Trojans with 9 rushes for 36yards.
Defensively, Randy Fells and Kenny Johnson recovered afumble apiece. Britt intercepted a pass.
