Lady Wolves prevail; Co-Lin men stumble

SENATOBIA — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves won their season openerWednesday night with a 78-76 comeback win over the NorthwestCommunity College Lady Rangers.
In the men’s game, Northwest pounded Co-Lin 92-62. The Rangerswere picked No. 21 nationally in the NJCAA Preseason Poll.
Co-Lin makes its home debut Monday, entertaining Coahoma for adoubleheader. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m. followed by themen.
Co-Lin 78, Northwest 76
“In the first half, Northwest went on a 13-0 run to start thegame and we didn’t score for the first 5 minutes and 20 seconds ofthe first half,” said Co-Lin women’s basketball coach Gwyn Young.”We settled down and stayed close in the first half.”
A pair of field goals from freshman Nikki Williams of WhiteCastle, La., gave Co-Lin a 78-76 lead with 30 seconds left to play.The Lady Wolves defense shut down the Lady Rangers offense tosecure the win.
Freshmen Whitney Scott, Rededra Smith and Williams led Co-Linwith 14 points apiece. Sophomore post Anna Autman netted 11points.
Erica Trahan, a 5-11 freshman from Baton Rouge, led off thebackboards with 16 rebounds, followed by Autman with 9 and KristianDavidson with 8. Trahan made 3 steals, had 3 assists and blocked 2shots.
Leading the Lady Rangers with 18 points was LaMaesha McAdory.Tiffany Baker scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Jeri Danielled off the backboards with 7 rebounds.
“We need to work on running our secondary break and take bettercare of the ball,” added Young. “We had too many turnovers. Ourhustle was good and our press was good. We had a good effort fromeveryone.”
Northwest 92, Co-Lin 62
“The season opener for the Co-Lin Wolves turnedout ot be a rude awakening,” said Co-Lin men’s head basketballcoach Dennis Sims.
The Wolves (0-1) committed 26 turnovers for the game whichresulted in over 60 of the Rangers’ 92 points, according toSims.
“When Northwest built the lead to 15 points in the second half,we had some players drop their heads and quit,” stated Sims. “We’vegot room for a lot of improvement fundamentally and mentally. We’rea long way from being successful.”
Joe Holliday led the Wolves with 15 points. Tremaine Enoch firedin 12 points and led off the backboards with 18 rebounds. Followingwith 11 points and 7 assists was Ivory Dishmon.
Northwest got 17 points from Antonio Logwood. Legarius Johnsonand Shawn Morgan collected 15 points apiece. Johnson pulled down 8rebounds.
