Regulate personal mobility devices

Dear Editor,
The increased usage of individual mobile assist vehicles(scooters, Rascals, etc.) on or near streets, roads, highways andparking lots in Brookhaven has created a situation which ispotentially dangerous for motorists and those who use thesevehicles. There appear to be no laws or regulations governing theiruse, and they are often not very visible to motorists. I realizethey are necessary for many to maintain their independence, and Iapplaud their efforts.
I believe, as a minimum, they should be equipped with a highlyvisible triangular flag similar to that required on tractors andfarm machinery. Such a flag on a fiberglass pole, extending abovethe vehicle, should be easily seen and not interfere with itsoperation.
In the long run, however, consideration should be given to suchthings as specified (marked) road crossings, extended paved roadsurface (shoulders), etc. to accommodate these vehicles.
This is a growing way of life, especially for our elderly and thosewith certain handicaps. We need to address this situation beforesomeone is involved in an accident.
