Crowded conditions at some Lincoln County schools are promptingofficials to take a closer look at student numbers, butSuperintendent Terry Brister said there are no immediate plans toaddress the situation.

“We’re going to look at transfers because of the numbers of kidsin our schools,” Brister said during Monday night’s School Boardmeeting. “We’re getting overcrowded.”

Brister said he met earlier Monday with school principals todiscuss the imbalance. During board action on student transfers,though, Brister assured members that currently enrolled studentsare in good shape.

“We’re not running anybody off,” Brister said.

The superintendent reiterated his point while discussing thesituation after the meeting.

“Right now, we’re not making any drastic moves,” he said. “Butit has gotten to the point it is a problem.”

Regarding enrollment, Brister said two of the county’s fourschools had remained about the same while two had seen significantincreases. He declined to identify the specifics of eachschool.

Brister attributed the increase to new students in thedistrict.

Brister said the district could “grandfather” transfer studentsalready attending county schools but limit acceptance of newtransfers in the future. He said restricting transfers ofout-of-district students would be considered first, followed bylimiting student transfers within the district.

“We’re looking at both,” Brister said.
