Circuit Court, grand jury begin new sessions

The first term of the Lawrence County Circuit Court opensTuesday with a new grand jury seated simultaneously.
Circuit Clerk Cindy Stokes said she expects the court term andseating of the grand jury to proceed quickly, although court is insession for two weeks.
Jurors seated for the court term can expect the usual run ofmisdemeanor and minor felony crimes. The court is expected to bepresented with 12 drug possession, 10 bad check, three felonydriving under the influence and two grand larceny cases, among afew others.
“It should be a quiet term,” Stokes said.
In two cases prosecutors decided not to move forward with thecharges, Stokes said.
Charges in both cases were drug counts, including possession ofa controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in acounty jail and conspiracy to transfer a controlled substance.
A charge of felony third-offense DUI was continued until Nov.2.
A grand larceny case was also continued, but a trial date hasnot been set.
A new grand jury will also be selected Tuesday. The grand jurywill serve for six months.
