Lady Wolves sweep S’west; gain playoffs

SUMMIT — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves won a South Division fastpitchsoftball doubleheader from the Southwest Lady Bears Wednesdayafternoon. Co-Lin took the first game 6-3 and the second contest7-1.
The Lady Wolves, coached by Allen Kent, improved to 23-2 on theseason. Co-Lin is 11-1 in division play and has clinched a berth inthe State Tournament.
According to Kent, Gulf Coast lost two games to Pearl RiverWednesday and that put Co-Lin two games ahead of Gulf Coast. Fourgames remain to be played in regular season action.
The Lady Wolves host Jones County Friday for a doubleheader. Thefirst game begins at 1 p.m.
Co-Lin 6, Southwest 3
The first game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning.Co-Lin’s Stacy Smith ripped a solo home run over the right fieldfence for a 1-0 lead. Brandi Bridges doubled, followed by walks byAngie Davis and Mandy Vinson. Jessica Melton smashed a hard singleto score Bridges and Davis. Melton got into an intentional rundownthat helped score Vinson from third base for the fourth run and a4-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Smith reach first on an error. AmberBeeson walked. Bridges doubled for the second time in the game toscore Smith and Beeson for the 6-2 lead for the Lady Wolves.
Emily Horne was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 earned runs on 4hits, 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
“Emily just keeps getting it done on the mound,” stated Kent.”She’s battled hard, throwing both games of all of our divisiondoubleheaders. She’s really been carrying us since Kendra Lindseywent down with her leg injury.”
Co-Lin 7, Southwest 1
In the second game, Co-Lin went up 1-0 on Southwest in the firstinning. Jackie Stowe singled and stole second base. Stacy Smithreached base on an error and scored Stowe.
Third-inning action saw Melton reach base on an error and scoreon a Megan Bateman double for a 2-0 lead .
In the fourth, Angie Davis singled, stole second and scored onBeth Smith’s single to push the Lady Wolves’ lead to 3-1.
Co-Lin posted four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1lead. Bridges walk and Beeson singled. With one out, Holly Pyleshit a sacrifice fly to score Bridges. Beth Smith’s single scoreBeeson. Melton smashed a single and Bateman ripped her seconddouble of the game to score Smith and Melton. Melton’s singled kepther 18-game hitting streak alive.
Horne (18-2) earned the win, allowing one run on 8 hits, 9strikeouts and one hit batter.
