Brookhaven and Petal met Saturday afternoon at Moyer Field in abattle of red-clad Panthers. The Forrest County-based Panthersauthored a 2-0 win over their Lincoln County counterparts, behindthe 4-hit shutout pitching of Michael Lindsey and Corey Lowery.

Brookhaven falls to 5-9 overall, while Petal improves to 16-2;ranked No. 9 in the state by a Jackson-based newspaper poll.

Brookhaven travels to Terry Tuesday for a JV/Varsitydoubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m. Petal hosts George CountyTuesday.

Petal 2, Brookhaven 0

This game resembled the Brookhaven/Lawrence County dual onFriday night. Good solid defense and outstanding pitching keptat-bats to a minimum.

An Ole Brook error at first base allowed Petal to grab a 1-0lead in the top of the first. With 1 out, shortstop Zach Tisdalehit a groundball to third. The throw to first caused the Brookhavenfirst baseman to come down the baseline to make the catch. Acollision ensued when Tisdale met Paxton King, causing the ball tosale into foul territory. Tisdale rounded first and went to secondon the fielding error. Tisdale later scored on a sacrifice fly bypitcher Michael Lindsey.

“It was a good play by both teams,” said Brookhaven head coachRandy Spring. “It could have gone either way.”

Brookhaven’s Cole Newell and Petal’s Michael Lindsey worked theentire game. Lindsey (1-1) picked up the win in 6-plus innings,allowing no runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. CoreyLowery got the save, allowing no hits, a walk and fanning 2 OleBrook batters.

“Our pitching did a good job today,” said veteran Petal headcoach Larry Watkins. “Both team’s pitching was outstandingtoday.”

In his first starting assignment, Newell (0-1) suffered the lossfor Ole Brook. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits, issuing 2base-on-balls and striking out 4. Darius Perkins threw theseventh.

“Cole (Newell) pitched well today,” said Spring who is in hissixth year at BHS.

Petal added another run in its half of the seventh for the finalmargin of victory. With 2 outs, first baseman Tyler Watkinssingled. Second baseman Darrin Farris singled. Centerfielder DustinLangley singled to score Watkins.

“Petal got some key hits with runners in scoring position,”added Spring.

Ole Brook got singles from Paxton King, Perkins, Zach Watson andGrant McDonnieal.
