Lady Bears take 1A title

The host West Lincoln Lady Bears captured their second straightDivision 7-1A Tournament title Friday night at Jack Case Gymnasium,gaining a tough 41-38 win over the Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats.
In the consolation game, the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes made afourth-quarter comeback to nip the Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets45-39.
The opening round of the South Mississippi Class 1A playoffs isset for girls teams Monday. West Lincoln hosts Mt. Olive, BogueChitto entertains Puckett and Enterprise is at Stringer.
West Lincoln 41, Bogue Chitto 38
In the championship game, Bogue Chitto led West Lincoln 10-3 inthe first quarter but the Lady Bears roared back in the secondquarter with a 17-8 run for a 20-18 lead at the half.
A 15-14 scoring spree in the third quarter pushed the LadyBears’ lead over the Lady Bobcats to 35-32. Both teams scored 6points in the final frame.
“Both teams played really hard,” said West Lincoln coach LaneYoung after the win. “In the fourth, we had just a couple of moreplays than they did.”
The Lady Bears (23-3) were led by senior guard Alicia Kennedywith 21 points, 13 rebounds and 4 steals. Lauren Smith fired in 10points, made 2 steals and had 3 assists. Britnee Smith collected 4rebounds and made 4 steals. Erica Shaw finished with 2 rebounds, 3steals and 2 assists.
“Coach (Christi) Terrell brought a good plan tonight,” saidformer Bogue Chitto head coach Mickey Myers who serves as anassisant to Christi Terrell. “Our effort was there. West Lincolnhad a poor shooting night. We must bounce back from this game andget ready for Monday against Puckett.”
The Lady Bobcats (19-9) got 16 points and 8 rebounds from MeleahBrown. Candace Braxton netted 13 points, collected 2 rebounds andhad 2 assists. Following off the backboards were Tanesha Johnsonwith 7 rebounds. Chelsey Miller had 6, followed by Shasta Porterwith 5.
St. Aloysius 45, Enterprise 39
A 16-7 fourth-quarter run by St. Aloysius lifted the LadyFlashes to the comeback win.
“The key was working defensively to limit Enterprise’s offenseand maintaining their No. 24 (Alisha Mason),” said St. Al coachDrew Brayer after the win. “Overall this was a good game.”
The teams were deadlocked 12-all in the first quarter.Enterprise went up 28-20 at the half and held a small 32-29 leadgoing into the final frame.
“We did not make the easy shots when we needed to, and we didnot rebound,” said Enterprise girls coach Jill Nations. “We willface the No.1 team (Stringer) out of Division 8-1A.”
Junior forward Alisha Mason led the Lady Jackets (14-10) with adouble-double,19 points and 13 rebounds. Kacy Rutland followed with7 points and 7 rebounds. Making 4 steals was Deanna Albritton.Kaylin Burke made 3 steals and had 3 assists.
The 15-16 St. Al girls got 10 points from Sarah Kerut.
