Two additional candidates qualified last week to run for WessonWard One alderman in the June 7 municipal election.

The qualification of those two candidates now gives Wesson atleast one candidate in each district.

Monticello had a quiet week with no new entries. The Ward Threerace remains without a candidate following incumbent AldermanGeorge Magee’s announcement that he would not seek re-election.

In Wesson, Andi Ellison Farrish and Kenneth Roberts qualifiedlast week in Ward One.

Incumbent Ward One Alderman Robert Derrick has not qualified butis expected to seek re-election, City Clerk Linda Dykes said.

The qualifying deadline for Wesson’s and Monticello’s municipalelections, which are nonpartisan, is 5 p.m. March 4.

“I think things will begin to pick up these last few weeks,”said Debbie Lea, Monticello deputy city clerk.

Dykes and Lea said they will not be attending one of a series ofmunicipal election training sessions being offered across the statethis month by the secretary of state’s office.

“I went to the one in December for municipal clerks,” Leasaid.

Dykes also said she already had attended a training session.

However, election commissioners in both towns will be attendinga training session Feb. 21 at Southwest Mississippi CommunityCollege in Summit.

Bob Meteer is chairman of the Wesson election committee, whileJames Hill leads the Monticello committee. Both will attend theSummit session.

The sessions will focus on practical election issues likecertifying candidates, canvassing returns, handling affidavits andchallenged ballots, working with different types of voting machinesand certifying results, according the secretary of state’soffice.
