Prep stops BA girls in OT; BA boys prevail

Records are made to be broken and the visiting Jackson Prep LadyPatriots were the spoilers Tuesday night in John R. Gray Gymnasium.The Lady Patriots clipped the defending State Overall champBrookhaven Academy Lady Cougars 56-53 in overtime, ending thehosts’ 51-0 winning streak.

In the boys game, Cole Hodges collected 21 points and sixassists as he powered Brookhaven Academy to a 79-72 win overJackson Prep.

The game finished in regulation deadlocked at 46-46. In thefour-minute overtime, the Lady Patriots outscored the Lady Cougars10-7 to pull out the big win.

Prep finished 11 of 14 at the free throw line while Brookhavenwas 9 for 15.

“Prep has four great ball handlers,” said BA girls head coachBarry Gray following the game. “The difference was that they gotsome easy baskets. I was pleased with the girls. We had a greateffort.”

When asked about the end of the winning streak, Gray replied,”Records are made to be broken.”

The Lady Cougars, who finished 43-0 last season, led the LadyPatriots 12-9 in the first quarter and trailed 21-19 at the half. A17-10 run in the third quarter by Brookhaven gave the hosts a 36-31edge going into the final frame.

Jackson Prep (9-1) outrebounded Brookhaven 24-13 but the LadyCougars had just 13 turnovers compared to the Lady Patriots’27.

“I was pleased with the way we played tonight,” said JacksonPrep girls head coach Troy Garner. “Brookhaven Academy is a greatteam. Our team is incredible. Our girls got after the boardswell.”

Powering the 8-1 Brookhaven girls with 14 points, five reboundsand four steals was senior guard Kelli Byrd. Center KristianDavidson fired in 13 points and grabbed three rebounds. LaurenSmith netted 10 points and made five steals. Mallory Logancollected two rebounds, made two steals and had six assists. EmilyLangley made three steals and had two assists.

Jackson Prep’s top scorer was Kate Carter with 19 points. AnnLampton netted 13 points.

BA 79, Prep 72

The Cougars (6-1) jumped on the Patriots (4-3) for a 24-17 leadin the first quarter and went up 48-35 at halftime. Going into thefinal frame, Brookhaven led Prep 62-46.

“We focused on our opportunities and our offensive rebounding,”said Brookhaven Academy boys coach Dale Watts. “We were shootingwell. It came together a lot better tonight.”

Contributing to the Brookhaven win with 17 points and 11rebounds was Seth Davis. Jeremy Winborne and Alan Gray scored 14points apiece. Winborne also made five steals and had five assists.Gray picked up six assists.

“Brookhaven Academy is one of the best-coachedteams in the state,” said Jackson Prep boys head coach Rod Delaney.”Hodges and Winborne are great players. I give all of the credit tothem.”

Pacing the Patriots with 18 points was Daniel Lutex. Fifteenpoints were sacked by Peyton Houdins. David Steele finished with 10points.

In the junior high girls game, Jackson Prepnipped Brookhaven 26-23. Kelli Snider led the Lady Cougars witheight points. Drew Tigner finished with six points and grabbed 10rebounds.

Kandie Bane led Prep with eight points followed by Mary S. Tolarwith six points.

The Prep boys posted a 67-24 junior high winover BA. Sawyer Wallace sparked the Cougars with 13 points.

John Shelton Williams netted 11 points for the Patriots.Following with 10 points each were Bob Hoose and Zach Watson.
