BA teams roar past Hillcrest

JACKSON — Guards Lauren Smith and Mallory Logan scored 14 and13 points respectively, leading the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougarsto a 55-30 Tuesday night trouncing of the Hillcrest Christiangirls. Guard Kelli Byrd chipped in 11 points as BA improved itsrecord to 3-0.

Brookhaven Academy won the boys game 68-65 in overtime as JeremyWinborne pumped in 24 points and Cole Hodges 18 in theirseason-opening victory. Forward Seth Davis added 15 points.

“We played extremely hard,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts.”Hillcrest had a lot bigger players than us, including a 6-6(center) inside.”

Hillcrest is under the direction of new head coach James Crainwho coached many years at Mendenhall.

“Our full-court pressure caused them to have three 5-secondviolations in the fourth quarter,” said Watts. “Our team playedpretty good defense.”

Hodges hit a pair of free throws in overtime to give BA a3-point lead. Hillcrest missed a tying field goal.

Hodges had 7 rebounds and Davis 5. Winborne made 5 steals. AlanGray and T-Boyd Lynch each had 3 assists.

Hillcrest was led by Kyle Cauthen’s 16 points.

The Lady Cougars (3-0) got 6 rebounds, 6 stealsand 6 assists from Byrd as the forged a 23-15 halftime lead. Loganhad 6 assists and 3 steals. Kristain Davison accounted for 9points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Smith had 5 steals.

Hillcrest was led by Meredith Guider’s 15 points.

Junior High Action

Brookhaven beat Hillcrest 34-10 in the junior high girls game,powered by Betsy Lynch’s 12 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

BA hosts Jackson Academy Saturday, starting at 2 p.m. with ajunior high twinbill. Varsity action starts at approximately4:30.
