Man’s cousin suspected in fatal shooting

A Lawrence County man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon – byhis cousin, authorities said – following an argument over whose carwas faster.

Terry Maye, 37, of Jerrytown Road, Oma, was shot twice in theupper chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence CountyCoroner Sidney Fortenberry around 2:45 p.m., Lawrence CountySheriff Joel Thames said.

Maye’s cousin Albert D. Smith Jr., 28, also of Jerrytown Road,was arrested Sunday for questioning about the incident.

“He will be officially charged this morning with murder,” Thamessaid Monday. “We do have witnesses to the shooting.”

Thames said Jerrytown Road residents witnessed the shooting andidentified Smith as the shooter.

A deputy went to Smith’s home Sunday and arrested Smith waswithout incident, Thames said.

The sheriff said initial reports indicate Maye and Smith werearguing over who won a car race earlier in the day when Smith wenthome, retrieved a .38 caliber revolver and returned to the scene,firing four shots.

The revolver has been seized, the sheriff said.

Thames said a preliminary hearing had not been scheduled thismorning.
