WESSON — The town of Wesson is looking to fill three vacanciesin the police department after recent resignations, said townofficials.
Police Chief Lance Falvey and officer John Whitaker have handedin their resignations due to a work conflict, said Mayor AltonShaw.
“With a new sheriff in Lincoln County, it has been stated thatnone of the officers will be able to work a second job (in lawenforcement),” said Shaw.
Falvey, Whitaker and Chad O’Quinn are all officers in LincolnCounty and work second jobs with the Wesson Police Department. Aresignation from O’Quinn has not been received but is expected, said Shaw.
Lincoln County Sheriff Wiley Calcote said his request was made”for safety’s sake.”
“I want our officers to just work in one position of lawenforcement. They get fatigued,” he said. “I don’t mind them havinganother part-time job, just not one in law enforcement.”
The resignations will be effective next week, and the board ofaldermen plan to address the vacancies Tuesday during their monthlyboard meeting.
“We’ll appoint a temporary police chief,” said Shaw. “There willstill be enough officers here to cover the shifts until we hiresome more full-time officers.”
Applications for the positions are available in town hall.
“We have several people interested,” said Shaw. “I’m evenlooking at the idea of sending someone to the (police)academy.”
