Woman killed in Hwy. 51 wreck

A Brookhaven woman died Thursday night from injuries shesustained in a near head-on collision on Highway 51 earlier in theevening, authorities said.

Rebecca Prestridge, 26, was pronounced dead at the King’sDaughters Medical Center Thursday at 7:40 p.m., said Robert Tyler,deputy coroner-medical examiner.

The accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. at the Highway 51 andStoneybrook Trail intersection, said Mississippi Highway PatrolStaff Sgt. Rod Crawford. Prestridge, in a Ford Tempo, was travelingsouth and making a left turn when she failed to yield right of wayand was struck by Tara A. Hudson of Brookhaven, who was travelingnorth in a Mercury car.

“We’re looking at somewhat of a head-on collision,” Crawfordsaid.

The trooper estimated the angle of impact to be about 45degrees. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

“Both vehicles sustained heavy damage,” said Crawford, addingthat they were totaled.

Prestridge, Hudson and Hudson’s son, Benjamin, were taken toKDMC.

Tara Hudson was transferred to the University Medical Center inJackson, where she was in stable condition Friday morning. BenjaminHudson was treated and released at KDMC, hospital officialssaid.

Funeral arrangements for Prestridge, under the direction ofCommunity Funeral Home, are incomplete.
