HATTIESBURG – Senior pitcher Jody Britt pitched the Loyd StarHornets to an 11-7 Friday night victory over the North ForrestEagles, giving Loyd Star a sweep in the Class 2A, first-round,best-of-three series. The Hornets had defeated North Forest 6-2Thursday night at Loyd Star.
Loyd Star (22-7) advances to the South State semifinals and willplay Seminary (27-4). The series starts Friday at Loyd Star at 7p.m. The second game will be Saturday at Seminary. A third game, ifnecessary, would be played Monday at Loyd Star.
Wesson, runner-up to Loyd Star in the Division 6-2A race, alsoadvanced by sweeping Gulfport St. John. The Cobras will playSumrall in the other South State semifinals series.
Britt went 7 frames, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits. He walked 2batters and struck out 8.
Britt helped his cause with a first-inning, 2-run homer againstNorth Forrest. Catcher Matthew Delaughter was the next batter andhe launched a solo shot. Delaughter later doubled.
Centerfielder Jared Britt had 3 hits for the Hornets. CatcherMatthew Delaughter, second baseman Justin Whatley and rightfielderBlake Wall had 2 hits for Loyd Star.
