Panthers bury Port Gibson

On Tuesday afternoon, Brookhaven and Port Gibson met at MoyerField for a Division 6-4A doubleheader. The Panthers evoked the10-run after 5-innings rule in both games, winning the first game16-6 and the nightcap 18-0 in four innings.

Brookhaven and Port Gibson play a single varsity game Friday, atPort Gibson. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Brookhaven (15-7, 10-3) flexed their muscles in their win overtheir Claiborne County counterparts. The Panthers pounded out 14hits.

Justin Sykes (1-0), who normally starts at second base, pickedup the win in his first pitching start of the year.

“Sykes gave us a few good innings,” said Brookhaven head coachRandy Spring. “He has been hitting the ball well also.” Sykes, whodrew his first start since breaking his arm at the beginning oflast season, also collected 2 base hits.

Grant McDonnieal led the Panther offense with 3 hits and 6 RBIs,including a 3-run homer; his team-leading fourth of the year.Brooks Hall and Corey Smith had 2 hits apiece.

The Panthers (16-7, 11-3) were able to empty their entire benchduring the 4-inning nightcap. “We were able to play everyone in thesecond game,” said Spring.

Pitcher Josh Townsend picked up his fourth win of the seasonagainst 2 losses. Townsend had 3 hits at the plate. Corey Smith,Scotty Smith and Hall had 2 hits respectively. Corey Smith hit aninside-the-park homer.
