Wesson girls nip Loyd Star

Wesson’s Lady Cobras edged Loyd Star 2-1 Monday in fastpitchsoftball action at the Hansel King Sportsplex. Wesson pushed homethe winning run in the top of the seventh. Millie Smith preservedthe victory and got the win. Bethany Dykes pitched the first 6innings.
Loyd Star was held hitless but got 11 walks. Caroline Burks wasthe losing pitcher, striking out 9 batters and walking none.
“We were very proud to beat Loyd Star, our biggest rival,” saidWesson assistant coach Heather Laird. “Coach (Jemmye) Helms and Iare extremely proud of our girls. All of them really stepped up anddid their part. It was a very exciting and tough game.
“It doesn’t get much better than this.”
The Lady Cobras (4-7) finished with 7 hits, led by Smith whotripled. Channelle McCrory and Sam Ellison had 2 hits and AmberDyess singled.
Loyd Star (11-8, 3-4) resumes play Thursday at West Lincoln,starting at 4 p.m.
In the JV game, Wesson edged Loyd Star 9-8.Dykes was the winning pitcher.
