BHS soccer players to Co-Lin

Brookhaven’s connection to the Copiah-Lincoln Community Collegesoccer program grew stronger with the signing of three BHS stars toscholarships. Joining the Co-Lin Wolves are forward Matt McGeheeand Daniel Gates and fullback David Easley.

The local trio were instrumental in leading the BrookhavenPanthers to the Division 6-4A championship Class 4A state playoffs.They were eliminated in the opening round by West Jones, losing inovertime. The Panthers were coached by Rob McCreary and first-yearassistant Charles Willoughby.

“We are losing a good bunch,” said Willoughby. “They will dowell at Co-Lin.” Willoughby was elevated to head coach whenMcCreary became a full-time administrator.

“Coach McCreary was the one who groomed and coached these youngmen,” said Willoughby. “I appreciate his help in helping themachieve their potential.”

Easley worked overtime on defense. “David shored up ourdefense,” said Willoughby. “He played through injury and alwaysgave 110 percent. He was a solid fullback for us.”

Offensively, McGehee led the Panthers with 28 goals asBrookhaven finished 12-6. Gates scored 17 goals.

“Matt led our offense well and provided senior leadership,” saidWilloughby. “He never took a day off.”

Willoughby said Gates was a hard-nosed player who complimentedBrookhaven’s offense. “Daniel always gave 110 percent every day. Heworked well in our offense.”

Gates said he planned to pursue a career in nursing at Co-Lin.McGehee is interested in social science and Easley wants to becomean x-ray technician.

At Co-Lin, the three Panthers will play for Coach Mike Assink.They will join former BHS players Josh Young and Dontae Dixon onthe squad.

“I look forward to having these three young men play for us,”said Assink. “They should be an asset to our team. I’m proud ofBrookhaven and the program they have developed.”

Assink said he concentrated on signing players from the Co-Lindistrict. “Mainly, I want to encourage the area players to workhard on their soccer skills and eventually play for Co-Lin.”

This is Assink’s second year as head coach at Co-Lin. The Wolvesbegin practice in early August. The season starts August 28, withCo-LIn playing at Holmes-Ridgeland in a non division game. Theseason runs through October.
