Two Brookhaven men face minimum three year sentences for theiralleged involvement in an attempt to smuggle a controlled substanceinto the Lincoln County Jail, according to authorities.
Jody Lambert, 29, of County Farm Road, was arrested two weeksago after he apparently used a false name to bring a packagecontaining Alprazolam, best known as Xanax, to inmate ValerieStubbs Warren, 40, of 1165 West Lincoln Road, said Lincoln CountyNarcotics Agent Dustin Bairfield.
“He gave a bag containing a notebook and box of envelopes to thejailer with Warren’s name on it,” he said.
The jailer then followed procedure and inspected the contents, discovering 41 and a half Xanax pills, added Bairfield.
“There were two pills stuffed in the corners of each envelope, but the jailer opened the envelopes and found the pills,” Bairfieldexplained.
Lambert was arrested and charged with the transfer a controlledsubstance in a correctional facility, which calls for a minimumthree-year sentence. He bonded out this week, and another arrestwas made, according to Bairfield.
“Investigation revealed that the package was coming fromValerie’s husband, who was on house arrest,” Bairfield said.
Robert “Frog” Warren, 43, of 933 Lucky Lane, was arrested overthe weekend and charged with the transfer of a controlled substancein a correctional facility. No bond was set since the arrest was aprobation violation.
Authorities complimented the jailers’ observations that lead tothe arrests.
“This shows that they’re watching packages closely. It was agood job on their part and Dustin for following up on it,” LincolnCounty Sheriff Lynn Boyte said.
Jail procedure calls for all packages to be inspected thoroughlybefore being given to inmates.
Authorities say it is common for people to sneak in items likemetal fingernail files and cigarettes in disguised packaging, sothey must check every package closely.
“It’s amazing what people will try,” said Boyte.
Authorities are still investigating the Nov. 11 incident andbelieve more arrests will follow within the next week.
