Cobras win region crown

RIDGELAND – The Wesson Cobras captured the Region 6-2A titleFriday night with a 37-7 region victory over the St. Andrew’sSaints. The Cobras collected 522 yards on total offense and made 18first downs.
“We are mighty glad to go up there and beat St. Andrew’s,” saidWesson head coach Ronald Greer.
According to Greer, “this sealed the deal for us for firstplace. It’s good to secure the home field for the second season(playoffs).” The Cobras will host the No. 4 team out of Region 5-2Aon Nov. 9.
Senior runningback Billy Ray Miller rushed 12 times for 154yards and two touchdowns to lead Wesson. Junior running backRussell Robinson powered the Cobras with 16 rushes for 144 yards.Marcus Corley followed with five rushes for 77 yards. QuarterbackNick Gunter ran three times for 61 yards.
A 62-yard burst by Corley and a 69-yard sprint by Gunter put 14points on the scoreboard in the first quarter for Wesson followingtwo PATs by Gunter.
St. Andrew’s scored a two-yard TD and cut the deficit to 14-7early in the second quarter.
The Cobras came back and Gunter kicked a 34-yard field goal topush Wesson’s lead to 17-7 at halftime.
Wesson punched in two touchdowns in the third quarter on a 2 and50-yard runs by Miller for 14 points and a 31-7 lead.
The Cobras added one more TD in the fourth quarter on a 2-yardcarry by Robinson. The PAT kick failed.
Defensively, Miller led the Cobras with 15 tackles. CharlesPowell collected 13 tackles. Robinson and Josh McCormick made ninestops apiece. Richie Miller intercepted two passes and Robinsonintercepted one pass.
Wesson returns to Stone Stadium Friday night to host region foeHinds AHS. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
