Mishaps kill 2 in Franklin Co.

FRANKLIN COUNTY — Thursday brought an afternoon of tragedy forresidents here as they heard the news of two unexpected deaths andseveral injuries in two unrelated accidents.

An 11-year-old Roxie boy was killed while riding hisfour-wheeler, and a 76-year-old Bude woman died Thursday afternoonand several others were injured in a two-vehicle accident onHighway 84.

Christopher Lehmann, 11, was enjoying the last days of summer onhis four-wheeler when an unexpected turn of events led to his deathin the front yard of his home in the Olenburg Community.

“He was just doing what a lot of young people do in their sparetime, and it turned tragic,” Franklin County Coroner Percy Peelercommented.

Peeler said that Lehmann was riding the ATV just a shortdistance from his home, in the front yard.

“For some apparent reason, it looks like he lost control of thefour-wheeler and it flipped,” Peeler said.

Lehmann was found underneath the four-wheeler around 5 p.m. andwas pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, the town of Bude was struck with tragic newsas well.

Sarah Berkley, 76, of Bude, died from multiple injuries shesustained following an accident at the intersection of Monroe Roadand Highway 84, Peeler said.

Berkley’s 1996 Mercury Marquis was traveling north on MonroeRoad, which is about one mile east of Bude, when it and a 1996Ford, driven by Susan Busby, 49, of Quitman, collided around 2:56p.m., a Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman reported.

Busby’s vehicle, which according to the accident reportsustained heavy damage, was traveling east at the time of theaccident.

She, along with the three passengers in her vehicle, were takento Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Her passengers were Edward Reeves, Birigie Reeves and FayeWhite, ages and addresses unavailable.

A hospital spokesman said Edward Reeves and Birigie Reeves weretreated and released. White was transferred to St. Dominic’sHospital in Jackson, where she was listed in stable condition inthe intensive care unit.

The cause of the accident has not been determined and is stillunder investigation, said an MHP spokesman.
