Storm downs trees, power this morning

Severe weather moving through Lincoln County was keeping civildefense, law enforcement and other emergency personnel busy thismorning.
Lincoln County remains under a tornado watch until 3 p.m. Thecounty was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch at 1 a.m.Monday, with three severe thunderstorm warnings issued for shortperiods since then, civil defense official said.
Downed trees were the source of much of this morning’s problems.Around 9:45 a.m., Cindy Galey said the civil defense office hadreceived 20 reports of trees down on power lines or roads.
The situation was much the same in the city limits.
“We’ve got trees pretty much all over town,” said BarbaraAllred, Brookhaven Police Department secretary.
Scattered power outages were seen across the city due to treesfalling on power lines at Chippewa and Cassedy Streets, BrookwayBoulevard and Highway 51, Highway 51 near Natchez Avenue andelsewhere. A display car in front of a Brookway Boulevard businesswas reportedly blown over due to high wind.
In the county, a tree fell and hit the corner of a home onFreedom Loop and another tree hit a roof over a trailer on Bale’sLane, Galey said. There was also a report of trees blocking Highway583 at the Ruth crossroads and other problems in the Topisawarea.
The south repeater for county communications services wasworking on a generator after electricity went out in that area.
County crews were being dispatched to problem areas and powercompany servicemen were being called to try and restore electricityas soon as possible. Law enforcement officials were called todivert traffic away from areas where power lines were still hotwhen they fell.
