Hornets sweep St. Andy’s

Loyd Star senior guard Brad Britt pumped in 20 points Fridaynight to direct the host Hornets in a 61-48 Division 6-2A win overthe St. Andrew’s Saints.
In the varsity girls game, point guard Monica Townsend directedthe Lady Hornets with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists andtwo steals in a 71-37 victory over the Lady Saints.
Loyd Star visits Richland Monday night for three games. Thejunior varsity game begins at 5 p.m.
Loyd Star 61, St. Andrew’s 48
The boys varsity game was close in the first half with St.Andrew’s leading 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and LoydStar picking up a 32-25 advantage in the final minute of the firsthalf.
Loyd Star (1-1, 1-0) came out red-hot in the third quarter andput together a 21-9 scoring run to go up 53-34 into the fourthquarter.
“In the third quarter, we picked it up,” said Loyd Star boysbasketball coach Gene Britt. “The intensity level was higher. Wegot some good layups.”
In the fourth quarter, the Loyd Star defense controlled thetempo and ran time off the clock to secure the win.
“We worked as a team and we won as a team,” said CoachBritt.
Junior forward Seth Britt nailed 15 points and made three stealsfor Loyd Star. Demarcus Barnes scored 14 points, made six steals,had three assists and three steals. Tyron Tyler led off thebackboards with seven rebounds and blocked three shots. JermaineHunter pulled down six rebounds followed by freshman Jared Brittwith five rebounds.
“Jared (Britt) did a good job for a ninth grader,” added CoachBritt. “Brad (Britt) had a good game. Our guys did well.”
The top scorer for 2-1 St. Andrew’s was Kevin Malphurs with 20points. Following with eight points was Jason Bridges.
In the junior varsity game, Sidney Chester paced Loyd Star with11 points in the 32-21 victory over St. Andrew’s. Julien Pittmanfinished with six points.
William Dunkwater led St. Andrew’s with 13 points.
Loyd Star 71, St. Andrew’s 37
In the girls contest, Loyd Star (1-1, 1-0) roared out to a 16-6lead over St. Andrew’s in the the first quarter, At halftime, theLady Hornets had kept their 22-point edge at 40-18.
Loyd Star kept up its pressure and rebounding to secure a 58-26lead going into the final frame.
Loyd Star girls coach Lori Britt was satisfied with the results.”We played everyone tonight. Everybody played hard on defense.’
Hornet guard Jamaka Henderson collected 12 points and fiverebounds. Netting 11 points was Dana Coke. Beck Smith followed withnine points. Christie May had five rebounds.
Winless St. Andrew’s got 20 points from Anna Marsh.
