WESSON – The Wesson Cobras fell to the Germantown Mavericks Saturday afternoon in a close game that ended with a final score of 59-50.

The Lady Cobras also battled the Lady Mavericks in another close game and were able to pull out a 46-43 win.

Wesson will be on the road Monday night, against the Lawrence County Cougars in Monticello. The JV boys’ game starts at 5 p.m. Varsity teams begin play at 6 for the girls and 7:30 for the boys.

Wesson 46 Germantown 43 

The Lady Cobras trailed most of the game, but senior LaCatherine Hence made a shot that put the Lady Cobras in front for good.

Sophomore Jashia Smith led the Lady Cobras’ offense and defense with a total of 14 points, three steals and seven rebounds. Freshman Aurianna Vaughn scored nine points, which included two 3-point shots, two steals and five rebounds. The Lady Cobras were 12/22 in free-throw action.

Germantown senior Tajee Harper topped the Lady Mavericks’ scoring list with a point total of 12 points, which included one 3-point shot, two steals and six rebounds. Senior Lanesha Allen also scored eight points and had 10 rebounds. The Lady Mavericks were 10 for 15 in free-throw action.

“The girls played well offensively and defensively,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “I am proud of the girls for finally being able to put together a whole game and finish it off.”

Wesson 50, Germantown 59 

Cobra senior Marquis Lofton directed the offense with a point total of 15, which included two 3-pointers, one steal and five rebounds. Junior Mack Smith was also a top player with five rebounds and a point total of 12. Sophomore Anthony Jones put 12 points on the board and had a total of six rebounds.

Junior Farrod Green led the defense with eight rebounds and had six points.

The Cobras were 10 for 21 in free throws.

The Mavericks’ powerhouse was senior Terik Richardson with 25 points, which included one 3-pointer and 13 rebounds. Other top scorers for the Mavericks were junior Jonathon Thompson with 14 points and senior Robert Smith with 11 points. The Mavericks had an average of 14-27 in free-throw action.

Coach Newman reflected on the loss by stating, “It was a tough loss for the guys. Germantown was loaded with big athletic kids. I thought my guys fought hard, but second chance points are still hurting us.

‘We have to do a better job at rebounding the ball. We’ve got to shake this loss off and get ready for our next game.”
