WESSON – The Wesson Cobras knocked off the Franklin County Bulldogs Tuesday night to gain a big district win with a final score of 8-4.

Wesson meets the Bulldogs again on Thursday, April 3, in Meadville. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved to Thursday due to the forecasted weather conditions. Game times are 5 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity.

Wesson 8, Franklin County 4 

The Wesson High School Cobras (8-8, 5-0) beat the Franklin County High School Bulldogs (9-6, 2-2)Tuesday night in 3A Region 7 district play.

The Cobras racked the runs on the scoreboard to finish the night with an 8-4 win. Cobras’ pitcher, Mack Smith, averaged six strikeouts, three walks and fielded one out.

“It was great to get a district win against Franklin County,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “Mack did a great job pitching, and we made good plays on defense. We need to keep hitting the ball Thursday night.”

Smith set the pace for the game with a three-run home run in the first inning. Wesson also got hits from Jimmie McQuage – two singles (RBI-1), Tyler McLeod – two singles, Jace Alexander – a single, Justin Boone – a single (RBI-2) and Conner Lowery – a single. The Cobras played good defense with Boone fielding four outs and McLeod fielding three outs, which included a double play to end the game.

Bulldogs’ pitcher, Derrick Brumfield, averaged two strikeouts and one walk through the fifth inning. Closeout pitcher Chris Cantrel had two strikeouts.

Franklin County had eight hits for the night with Dematre Collins hitting a solo home run in the third inning. Other top hitters for the Bulldogs were Hoby Mullins – two singles, Benard Selman – two singles (RBI-2), Ethan Verduin – a single, Brumfield – a single, and Connor Quinn – a single.

Mullins and Verduin were the top fielders for the Bulldogs with three outs each against the Cobras.

 In junior varsity action,  The Cobras had a good showing against the Bulldogs, winning 6-3.
