Come rain or shine, Halloween is still on for Thursday in the city of Brookhaven, officials say.

In the days leading up to Halloween, local residents have wondered if the stormy weather forecast for Thursday might convince city officials to change the date for trick or treating.

But no change is planned, officials say.

“The only time the city ever reschedules Halloween is if the date happens to fall on a Sunday. Otherwise, all Halloween activities will occur as usual on Oct. 31,” said City Clerk Mike Jinks.

Brookhaven Chief of Police Bobby Bell confirmed that Wednesday morning. “I haven’t heard anything to suggest otherwise,” said Bell. “Everything will remain as scheduled.”

Mayor Joe Cox sees the potential upside in notifying the public ahead of time that no change is being made. “It’s unfortunate about the weather,” he said. “But at least the community has time to re-schedule their plans if they wish.

“There will be a number of indoor events going on Thursday that might interest residents,” Cox added.

Weather forecasts call for a 50 percent chance of rain during the day Thursday, and up to a 100 percent chance Thursday night.

Families who decide to venture out for trick or treating are urged to exercise safety precautions and keep a close eye on developing weather conditions Thursday evening.

For those who’d rather stay indoors and enjoy the holiday fun, a number of local organizations have events scheduled for Halloween night, according to The Daily Leader Calendar.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS

Trunk or Treat at Bethel AME Church is from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the parking lot located on 712 S. First St. The event is open for all children of the community.

Realkids Trunk or Treat at Brookhaven First Assembly is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the church located at 226 N. Second St., Brookhaven. Area residents are invited bring the kids out to BFA for a fun night with candy, games, inflatables, guess-who Bible characters and more. The event is open for all children of the community.

Halloween Party at the VFW 4806 on South First Street will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
