Like the mighty Mississippi River, the Southwest Lady Bears just keep rolling along. Taking to the court for the first time in almost a month, the Lady Bears picked up their ninth straight win Tuesday night, 79-67, over the Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead.

With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 9-1 on the season. They are currently 2-0 in the MACJC’s South Division. The Lady Trojans, falling to Southwest for the second time in the season, fell to 6-4.

“I think we came back in pretty decent condition,” Southwest head coach Brent Harris said after the game. “[And] that helps. But, that’s on them (the players). Our sophomores, Levy and Littlepage, kind of led us through some tough times when things didn’t go well. I was very proud of [the team]. I thought we played together, I thought we played smart. It’s a good first game back, a good win.”

Levy and Myers both had 15 points to top the Lady Bears offense while Littlepage was also in double figures with 13 points. Courtney Epting netted nine points with Mault picking up seven. Wilson and Raven Reyes both got on the board with five points. The Lady Bears hit 10 of 18 free throws.

Krystal Nailer scored 12 points to pace Mississippi Delta. The Lady Trojans were 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Southwest 76, Ms. Delta 69

Avenging an early-season home loss to Mississippi Delta, the Southwest started the 2014 portion of their season off with a 76-69 win over the Trojans in Moorhead Tuesday night. The win moved the Bears to 5-5 on the season. They are 2-0 in the MACJC South. The Trojans, meanwhile, fell to 5-6.

The Bears seemed on the verge of a blowout win early in the game. After falling behind 2-0, they proceeded to score 21 of the next 29 points to take a 21-10 lead with 11:01 to play in the first half. An old-fashioned three-point play by Xavion Dillon capped the run.

“Anytime you have a chance to win on the road, it’s obviously really big,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, “and being able to avenge [the] earlier loss we had at our place to Mississippi Delta was really sweet.”

“I’m really excited, not just about the win,” Carter continued. “For the first time this year, we kind of played as a team and made some plays down the stretch, not one-on-one plays, but as a team. That’s some growth that we’ve been looking for and hopefully (will) continue to build on in the future.”

Deione Weeks led all scorers, and five Bears in double figures, with 18 points in the game. Williams scored 14 points, Moore had 13, Chris Jones 11 and Dillon 10.

Twymond Howard and Robbins both netted four points for Southwest while Jamal Hester registered two. The Bears made good on 19 of 30 free throws.

James Evans and Zamarlus Griffin both had 12 points to lead Mississippi Delta’s offense. The Trojans were 15 of 19 from the free throw line.
