We applaud the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Student Government Association’s recent proposal to make the campus smoke-free.

The SGA presented its request to the Co-Lin Board of Trustees Thursday and asked that a smoke-free policy be put into effect starting as early as this August or at least by January 2015.

The SGA also agreed to help educate students about the policy if it’s enacted and secure the help of King’s Daughters Medical Center personnel to present programs to help smokers kick the habit.

The hazards of smoking and second-hand smoke have long been well documented. Brookhaven enacted a smoke-free policy some time ago, and many other municipalities have gone the same route. It’s a trend worth continuing to our college campuses.

In the meantime, anyone who wants to kick the habit can get immediate help by attending KDMC’s ACT smoking cessation classes. New classes start every six weeks and are held on Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

The class also is a support group, supplying nicotine replacement items, free of charge, with a doctor’s prescription and class attendance. Registration is required. For more information, call Kim Bridge, KDMC community education director, at 601-835-9406.
